Why Hats on for Children’s Palliative Care?
Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care, with the hashtag #HatsOn4CPC, is a day celebrated annually worldwide on the second Friday in October, which is usually the day before World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. This year Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care falls on Friday 11 October. The day aims to raise awareness of the rights of very sick children with incurable and life-threatening illnesses to receive palliative care.
We know that there are at least 1 million children in South Africa diagnosed with a life-threatening or life-limiting illness or condition that could significantly shorten their lives. The handful of children’s palliative care services that exist in our country are underfunded and inadequate to meet the overwhelming need. A UNICEF/ICPCN report estimates that just 5% of children who need palliative care in South Africa can access it. As a result, many thousands of South African children suffer from physical and emotional pain and distressing symptoms which could be better managed, and their lives significantly improved with palliative care.
Durban #HatsOn4CPC Fun Walk
On Sunday 27 October 2024, PatchSA and Umduduzi Hospice Care for Children will hold a 5 km Fun Walk along the Durban beachfront promenade as a #HatsOn4CPC awareness raising event. The Fun Walk will start and end at the Amphitheater area of the Durban beachfront promenade. (Opposite Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani Hotel.) We will walk in the direction of Suncoast Casino and back again. Food and drinks will be on sale, but we suggest you bring your own water.
The family-oriented walk is open to all, and participants are encouraged to come wearing a hat to show their support and solidarity for children’s palliative care. Babies in strollers, young children and even well-mannered pets on a leash are all welcome to join in the fun.
Wear a hat and win spot prizes
There will be an array of fabulous spot prizes which will be presented for the most impressive hats at the end of the walk! Only those who are registered will be eligible to win a prize.
Entry fee & Registration for the walk
R50 for adults and R20 for children aged 4 -12 years. Children 3 years and under are free.
