On receiving a donation of the official Springbok jerseys from the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the idea was conceived to have two of the jerseys signed exclusively by Springbok captains with the objective of creating two unique and sought after memorabilia for philanthropic auction. And so an 8-year long journey began, albeit with a two year hiatus during the COVID pandemic, with the first signature being obtained in Pretoria, South Africa in August 2016, and a full house of 36 signatures being achieved in London, England in August 2024 – the 36 signatures represent all 34 Springbok captains currently alive, as well as two who are sadly no longer with us.

The 36 Springbok captains who have signed the jerseys, in chronological order of having been appointed as captain from 1960 to 2024, are Des van Jaarsveldt, Avril Malan, Dawie de Villiers, Tommy Bedford, Hannes Marais, Piet Greyling, Morné du Plessis, Theuns Stofberg, Wynand Claassen, Divan Serfontein, Naas Botha, Jannie Breedt, Francois Pienaar, Tiaan Strauss, Adriaan Richter, Gary Teichmann, Corné Krige, Rassie Erasmus, André Vos, Bob Skinstad, John Smit, Victor Matfield, Johann Muller, Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger, Fourie du Preez, Adriaan Strauss, Warren Whiteley, Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Duane Vermeulen, Schalk Brits, Handré Pollard, Bongi Mbonambi and Salmaan Moerat.

Tommy Bedford adds the final signature to the Springbok Jerseys on 3 August 2024 in London, England, where he now resides.
Tommy captained the Springboks three times in 1969.

The two framed autographed Springbok jerseys are being auctioned to raise much needed funds for Palliative Care for Children South Africa (PatchSA), of which the ultimate beneficiaries will be the many children in South Africa afflicted with life-limiting and life-threatening chronic illnesses.

We wish to acknowledge the following sponsors for their enormous contribution to this auction.

  • Make It Visual Picture Framing for sponsoring the framing of the two autographed Springbok jerseys
